OUR HOSPITAL
New Somerset Hospital is South Africa’s oldest hospital and the first to provide training to medical doctors and nurses. New Somerset was the original academic hospital of the University of Cape Town before Groote Schuur Hospital opened its doors in 1937.
The hospital provides comprehensive health care services which includes HIV, Aids and TB- related treatment care, support services, HIV counselling and testing. It became the prime referral centre for the treatment of AIDS and established the first antiretroviral distribution centre in 2005. The hospital also has a growing maternity and neo natal unit, paediatrics unit, surgical department and a rapidly expanding psychiatric department. It also recently responded quickly and efficiently to the COVID -19 pandemic.

OUR VOLUNTEERS
The main purpose of the Board, whom all are volunteers is to:
- participate in strategic planning;
- monitor the performance, effectiveness and efficiency of the hospital and measures taken by the hospital management to improve the performance and quality of service of the hospital;
- take measures to ensure that the needs, concerns and complaints of patients and the community are properly addressed by the hospital management;
- foster community support for the hospital;
- encourage volunteers to offer their services in performing general duties for the hospital;
- request and review at least once a year the financial statements and annual financial statements of the hospital;
- raise funds for the functioning of the Board and Hospital;
- at reasonable times and in cooperation with the hospital management conduct scheduled visits to the hospital, without impeding its functioning, and provide constructive written feedback on such visits to the management.
